At the top of your mining dash board (in the client) there are two controls: one for the GPU and one for the CPU -set both to "Mine While Idle" by left clicking the appropriate option. You can set each control GPU & CPU separately to suit you best.
What laptop do you have? On my MSI- I have a program called Dragon Center that I can throttle my GPU from ECO / Comfort / Sport / Turbo and that controls how much heat my GPU runs at- a lower setting will make less heat but slower mining. I can also control my laptop fans speed there. There may be somehting similar for your laptop.
