Shares!

I am new to mining in general and I noticed the value of shares changing every now and then. What are they and what are they for?

Edit: I would also like to note that the value for shares on my CPU is higher than my GPU, why is this so?

    Shares come from a pool -think of them like partitions or blocks- the number of which you are currently processing using a specific hardware component like GPU/CPU.
